Heute ‚networken‘ wir alle, von morgens bis abends, beruflich und privat. Und dabei helfen uns moderne Technologien, manche nennen diese ‘social media’, andere nennen diese ‘Arbeitszeitkiller’.
Trotzdem ist es wohl unbestritten, dass mit modernen Technologien das ‘Networking’ erleichtert werden kann. Im Internet, auf ‘sozialen Plattformen’ wie z.B. facebook oder linkedin, finden sich Menschen zusammen mit ähnlichen Interessen, die noch von 20 Jahren niemals voneinander gewusst hätten.

‚Technologische Avantgarde‘ in Mpumalanga

Diese Möglichkeiten wollen auch kleine CBOs nutzen: Um auf sich aufmerksam zu machen – für potentielle Donors oder Kooperationspartner, um sich untereinander auf dem Laufenden zu halten, um gefunden werden zu können.
Deshalb hatte im August 2010 die damalige DED/GIZ Fachkraft Airi Schmittpott für mehrere Partnerorganisationen einen Internetauftritt inhaltlich vorbereitet, zwei der Organisationen konnten dann während eines gemeinsam mit mir durchgefuehrten Workshops erlernen, diese Webseite selbst zu pflegen, mit Hilfe des WordPress.com Blog-Systems (http://mpumalangaarts.wordpress.com/ und http://leandracc.wordpress.com/).
In den vergangenen Monaten bekam GIZ-Julia Plessing als Koordinatorin des Bereiches ‚Stärkung der Zivilgesellschaft‘ eine Anfrage des Netzwerkes ‚Mpumalanga Youth Forum‘, einer Organisation die die Aufgabe hat, Jugendgruppen zu unterstützen und zu vernetzen. “Das Mpumalanga Youth Formum möchte eine einfach zu bedienende Webseite einrichten, die kein Geld kosten soll, die irgendwann einmal von den Jugendgruppen selbst gepflegt werden kann und die vielleicht sogar auf dem Handy aufgerufen werden kann” so die Anfrage, wie sie Julia an mich weitergegeben hat.
Für eine Webseite mit diesen Anforderungen gibt es verschiedene technische Alternativen, als erfahrender WordPress Schulungsgeber und WordPress Nutzer schlug ich Julia gerne vor, eine WordPress Werkstatt in White River in Mpumalanga abzuhalten – um die Webseite selbst einzurichten, aber auch um den Teilnehmern einen moeglichst tiefen – aber trotzdem nicht verschreckenden – Einblick in das System von WordPress.com zu geben. Meine eigene Partnerorganisation loveLife stellte mich für diese Veranstaltung gerne frei.
Das Desmond Tutu Centre for Leadership als Veranstaltungsort hat einen Computerraum mit guter Internetanbindung. Wir konnten deshalb ‘am lebenden Objekt’ einen Blick auf die Dummy Webseite werfen, die ich mit ein paar Klicks für diesen Event vorbereitet hatte. Anhand der Webseite konnten gleich alle sechs Teilnehmer auf den gleichen Stand gebracht werden: Was ist ein Browser? Was ist das Frontend einer Webseite, also das, was alle Internetnutzer sehen können? Was ist das Backend eines Blog-Systems, also das, womit der Administrator das Aussehen und die Inhalte des Frontendes steuern und aktualisieren kann? Wie lässt sich mit dem WordPress-System das Aussehen der Webseite grundsätzlich verändern, wo kann man Farben einstellen?

Im Browser kann durch ein paar Klicks im Backend das Aussehen der Webseite radikal verändert werden, ohne dass der Administrator auch nur das geringste Vorwissen von der Browser-Sprache HTML oder von Webseitenprogrammierung hat.
Neben dem Technischen sind die Inhalte Grundvoraussetzung. Nqaba Ndlovu als Project Manager des Mpumalange Youth Forums hatte vorab die einzelnen beteiligten Jugendgruppen gebeten, ein Fact Sheet zu ihrer Organisation anzulegen: “Es ist für kleine Organisationen ein erster Schritt, sich selbst kurz darzustellen. Wenn wir das dann auch noch online setzen können, dann strahlen die Augen der Teilnehmer, dann sind sie technologische Avantgarde hier in Mpumalanga.”
Die Fact Sheets, die im Word Format vorliegen, können einfach per Copy and Paste in das WordPress System eingefügt werden. Diese hervorragende inhaltliche Vorarbeit machte es möglich, dass wir uns im Workshop noch weitergehender mit den Möglichkeiten des WordPress Systems auseinandersetzen konnten. Der aktuelle Stand der Webseite hier: http://mpyouth.wordpress.com. Nqaba will zukünftig zu einzelnen Netzwerk-Veranstaltungen per blog-post und rss Feed einladen, wir bauten eine eigenständige Navigation und das Bild über der Webseite wurde von einer professionellen Designerin kostenfrei erstellt.
Die anderen Teilnehmer testeten an eigenen WordPress Seiten was möglich ist und stellten zum Beginn des zweiten Tages ihre Seiten vor, die dann im Kreis diskutiert wurden. Die dabei aufkommenden Anregungen wurden von Ncaba aber auch von den anderen teilnehmern dann gleich aufgenommen um weitere verbesserungen an der Seite voranzutreiben.
“Ziel ist es, dass in zwei Jahren eine der Jugendorganisationen nicht nur selbst diese Seite pflegen wird und Unterseiten erstellt, schön wäre es, wenn die Jugendlichen selbst einen Service anbieten können, für Unternehmen oder andere Organisationen Webseiten zu erstellen.” Nqaba hat sich für sein Vernetzungs-Projekt also Einiges vorgenommen, die GIZ wird ihn dabei weiterhin gerne mit Rat und auch mit Tat unterstuetzen, denn durch diese Webseite hat sein Jugend-Netzwerk an Öffentlichkeitswirksamkeit gewonnen und die Jugendlichen selbst haben einiges lernen und anwenden können. “Networking” ist also mehr als nur ein Modewort in Mpumalanga, und auch mehr als nur “Arbeiten am Internet”.

Fuer einige Organisationen kann die eigene Webseite Sinn machen

Internet ist ja auch nicht alles, nicht jede kleine und kleinste Community Based Organization (CBO) braucht einen eigenen Internetauftrifft. Fuer einige Organisationen kann die eigene Webseite aber Sinn machen. Zur internen Kommunikation zwischen den Mitarbeitern und Mitgliedern der Organisation, gleichzeitig auch fuer die externe Kommunikation , zur Ansprache von interessierten Buergerinnen und Buergern – oder fuer Geldgeber.
Airi Schmidtpott ist seit zwei Jahren Beraterin für Demokratieförderung im Bereich Zivilgesellschaft in der suedafrikanischen Provinz Mpumalanga, und unterstützt NGOs und CBOs dort sowohl inhaltlich als auch technisch. Vier von Airis Organisationen wollen ihre eigene Website. Und sie wollen nach Moeglichkeit selbst Aenderungen an ihrer Website vornehmen, ohne gleich einen teuren Auftrag an Designer und Programmierer vergeben zu muessen.
Durch einen Kontakt bei der suedafrikanischen DED-Vollversammlung 2010 konnte die Idee ausgebaut werden: Norbert Herrmann, Entwicklungshelfer im Bereich Knowledge Management, nutzt und testet seit Jahren verschiedene kostenfreie Webseiten- oder Blog-Systeme. Blogger, drupalgardes, google sites bieten sich als voellig kostenfreie Anbieter an. Und genauso wordpress.com, das Norbert Herrmann beispielsweise fuer die Unterstuetzung einer CBO in Kenia (http://taretomaa.wordpress.com/) anwendet. Zur Nutzung von wordpress.com hat Herrmann bereits in Deutschland Schulungen durchgefuehrt.
„Den kleinen Partnerorganisationen fehlt oft die finanzielle Ausstattung um grossangelegte Webseitenprojekte zu starten. Mit bestimmten Webseiten-Systemen koennen die Kosten klein gehalten werden – oder es fallen gar keine Kosten an“ so Herrmann. Kostenfreie Anbieter boeten sich als ‚kleine‘ Loesung oder als Einstieg in die digitale Welt auf alle Faelle an. Und sind in den allermeisten Faellen mehr als ausreichend fuer die Beduerfnisse von CBOs. Und warum dann nicht kleine und netz-unerfahrene Partnerorganisationen auf die Moeglichkeiten dieser kostenlosen Webseiten-Systeme aufmerksam machen. Insbesondere, wenn die Bedienung dieser Systeme relativ leicht erlernbar ist?
„Es war schon vor dem Website Workshops erkennbar, dass zwei Partnerorganisationen besonders stark an der eigenen Webseite interessiert sind. Diese beiden haben mit meiner Unterstützung vorab die Inhalte formuliert und strukturiert, die sie online setzen wollen. Auch Fotos wurden gesammelt, digitalisiert und vorbereitet“ fasst Airi Schmidtpott die Vorbereitungsanstrengungen zusammen. Eine der beiden zusaetzlich eingeladenen Organisationen hat bereits eine Webseite, die inzwischen jedoch veraltet ist. Niemand in der Organisation ist in der Lage, diese Seite zu aktualisieren. Man muesste fuer eine Aktualisierung einen teuren Spezialisten engagieren – oder man koennte vielleicht die Webseite ersetzen mit einem einfachen System. Der Workshop war fuer sie die Moeglichkeit, sich klarer zu werden was alles noetig ist, um selbst eine eigene Webseite zu erstellen und zu pflegen.
Ohne grundlegende Computerkenntnisse kann man nicht einfach loslegen, man muss wissen, wie man mit der Maus umgeht, was ein Browser ist und man sollte Interesse an dieser modernen Technik haben.

Thomas Ngwenya nutzt den Computer vor allem für Textverabeitung und hat wenig weitere Erfahrungen mit der digitalen Technik. Sein erster Blick auf die Konfigurationsmoeglichkeiten fuer die wordpress-website war ernuechternd: „Man muss ja wirklich ein Computerfachmann sein, um die eigene Webseite zu erstellen.“
Mandla Mthethwa hingegen hat schon oefters im Internet gesurft. Fuer ihn war der Workshop die Moeglichkeit, nicht nur Wissen aufzunehmen sondern auch gleich anzuwenden: Er konnte seine waehrend des Workshops erstellte Webseite innerhalb der drei Stunden bereits mit vorbereiteten Texten und Bildern fuellen. Und einen Tag spaeter hat er weitergehende Funktionalitaeten des WordPress-Systems ausprobiert und das Design der Seite seinen Beduerfnissen angepasst. Das Community Centre in dem Township Leandra ist nun mit einer voellig kosten- und werbefreien Website im Internet vertreten: http://leandracc.wordpress.com/ Der Leiter des Community Centres, Zwelibanzi Hlatshwayo, war selbst beim Workshop und freut sich: „Nun können wir in unseren Projektanträgen auf die weiterführenden Informationen auf unserer Webseite hinweisen und zeigen, dass wir schon einige Erfahrungen haben und mehr können, als nur das beantragte Projekt.“ Auch das Labor der darstellenden Künste in Mpumalanga hat mit dem Worpshop ihre eigene Webseite (http://mpumalangaarts.wordpress.com/), an der immer wieder Aktualisierungen vorgenommen werden.
„Allein das Zusammenstellen der Inhalte hatte schon den wunderbaren Effekt, dass die Organisationen sich selbst nun etwas strukturierter sehen. Dass dann nach dem Workshop tatsaechlich zwei ansprechende Webseiten stehen ist natuerlich nochmal ein Erfolg“ so Airi Schmidtpott. Auch fuer Norbert Herrmann war der Workshop lehrreich: „Das Computer-Vorwissen verschiedener Teilnehmern ist auch bei Workshops in Deutschland oft sehr heterogen, aber hier in Afrika sind die Unterschiede im Vorwissen noch ausgepraegter. Das bedeutet fuer mich auch, moeglichst einfache Webseiten-Systeme zu nutzen. Zusaetzlich ist die Personal-Fluktuation innerhalb der Organisationen sehr ausgepraegt und wenn die Internet-Wissenstraeger sich verabschieden hilft es, wenn man ein einfaches System hat in dem sich auch unerfahrenere Mitarbeiter schnell zurechtfinden koennen.“ In Zukunft will Herrmann verstaerkt Ausschau halten nach kostenfreien Webseiten-Systemen, die auch bequem ueber einen mobilen Zugang ueber das Handy erreichbar sein koennen. Das Cell-Phone ist in Afrika fuer viele Menschen der Einstieg in die digitale Welt. Eine weitere seiner Ideen ist die Praesentation von Partnerorganisationen in Wikipedia, was fuer groessere Organisationen Sinn machen kann, (z.B. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LoveLife_South_Africa).
Das Interesse an einer eigenen Webseite ist in vielen Organisationen weiterhin aktuell. Wenn sich weitere POs interessieren und deren Mitarbeiter auch einen kleinen Internet-Hintergrund besitzen, dann wird dies ganz gewiss nicht die letzte Webseiten-Werkstatt gewesen sein. Airi hat inzwischen einen kleinen Guide erstellt mit der Erklaerung der wichtigsten WordPress-Funktionalitaeten. Die Partnerorganisationen nutzen diesen Ausdruck lieber als online im wordpress-Handbuch zu suchen.
Neben dem anfangs erwaehnten Mehrwert einer Webseite fuer die interne und externe Kommunikation bringt so ein Workshop auch den von Airi Schmidtpott registrierten strukturierenden Effekt fuer die Organisation. Ein weiteres Argument fuer die eigene Webseite ist, dass sich die Organisationen damit mehr als Teil der groesseren Weltgemeinschaft fuehlen. Zwelibanzi Hlatshwayo formulierte das fuer sein Community Centre in Leandra ganz einfach: „Mit Hilfe des DED kann uns die Welt jetzt sehen.“

Any mother’s heart will bleed as soon as she sees hungry children

Suzan is seventy-eight of age. Her husband was the nephew of Albert Luthuli, the first South African ever to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. That was in 1956. In 2010 Suzan Luthuli looks after Orphans and vulnerable children and teenagers. For this engagement she was honoured by the president of South Africa, in April she received the “Order of the grand councillar of the baobab”. Today I meet Suzan in the North-West province. She takes part in the annual all hands meeting with her colleagues. „goGogetters“ those ladies are called, aged between 53 and 86 years. They cannot just wait and see when children are suffering. “Any mother’s heart will bleed as soon as she sees hungry children, children that do not wear proper clothes, children that are left behind. “Onkabetse Mokgadi is one of Suzans colleagues, the same as Annah Dipholo, Miriam Sedimo, Sophia Tau, Xakwile Maxakane, Dikeledi Kasebidile. Each of these 50 goGos from North-West is looking after up to 90 children and teenagers. „Listening, taking their issues serious, and supporting them. Even sometimes you have to take them by their hands that are what these youngsters are lacking.” Onkabetse says.
The South African HIV prevention organisation for youth, loveLife, is organising the country-wide network of the goGos. Tshireletso Phatlhanyane of loveLife manages the goGos in the North-West province. „A goGo rarely gives their home for these children, this would be something they could not afford. But they do everything they can to enhance the living standards of these children and teenagers.” One key issue is the contact to public services, mainly to receive public grants. Even if there might be one parent, this one hardly knows how to deal with bureaucracy. A goGogetter can help here, most of them used to be teachers, nurses, social workers.

Another key issue is bringing the youngsters back to school. Schools are relatively safety places, e.g. is the HIV prevalence of school attendances much lower than the prevalence in the group of people that left school early. However, a lot of these vulnerable children do need to earn money or do need to care for their siblings. What they would need is school uniforms, shoes, school material, groceries, money. Even if the public grants are coming in, this money seldom is enough to feed a family or a number of siblings. Here goGos take action. In their network of acquaintances, business-people and other persons in the community they ask for support. Hands keep clapping during the North-West meeting whilst the ladies tell their success stories: another family that receives groceries for three months, another 20 school uniforms sponsored by the local business store, another 10 children having birth certificates. Birth certificates are a prerequisite for going for public grants. „Yes, the goGos are old. They are old – and wise. They know how to deal with youngsters. My goGos won’t be fooled by anybody. They have the experience to speak to parents, principals, social workers” Tshireletso Phatlhanyane says. In some cases the goGos even have to work together with the police: when they report abuse. Then sometimes it takes time until something is done about it. This might end up in dangerous situations, when the abuser tries to deal with the goGo.

It makes sense that loveLife supports these single fighters, gives these goGos a home in the loveLife organisation. The goGos even get a small grant. Tshireletso explains: „goGos give help to OVCs, they open a door for them for a self-determined life. Thus loveLife is to support these goGos. For only strong teenagers manage to face dangers and risks, such as HIV and AIDS“. Three advisors of German Development Service from the fields of monitoring, counselling and knowledge management work with loveLife to keep this huge organisation on track. Every year loveLife trains 1300 young stipend takers on the field of HIV-education and health. Management and several additional skills are incorporated. Together with 5 selected volunteers these groundBREAKERS implement educational programs in their region, in schools, clinics, community centres and youth centres. At the moment more than 6000 sites all over the country are associated with loveLife. loveLife organises sport events, loveLife educates by the use of local and national radio programs. There are public service announcements from loveLife on TV. loveLife has it’s printed monthly youth magazine “Uncut”, it’s web page loveLife.org.za, loveLife is in facebook and loveLife has an own mobile portal mymsta.mobi. Through loveLife’s call centre more than 100.000 callers find counselling and information. And – loveLife has it’s goGogetters.
During this weekend all North-West goGos meet at a idyllic resort in the Magalieberg mountains. Not for recreation, for training! They are being schooled in communication skills, they do role playing like community meetings and sessions in families. They get hinds to easily establish social networks as well as the skills to fill monitoring forms properly – with which the goGos can document their work. Special request of some of the ladies is knowledge on how to become self employed: We present a structure on how a business idea might work. There are numerous detailed questions by the goGos. As they prefer to speak seTswana the loveLife area coordinator Mantsho Batlhapimg translates. Some of the ladies think of having a soup kitchen or to build orphans homes. They write down every piece of information they get a hold of.
Morning, lunchtime, evening: as soon as there is only few minutes break, that’s when the goGos start singing and dancing and praying. Every lady will read her favourite verse from the bible, sing her favourite song – sometimes it is the loveLife goGo song stating: „You still can“. And they share their experiences and concerns. At the moment Suzan is talking, in perfect English: “No doubt it has been an enormous honour for me to go to Pretoria and to receive the Order. And I love to come here to you my sisters.” For Suzan this meeting with the colleagues is more than a meeting, it is exchange of experiences and source of the power that helps her to stand the past and the forthcoming challenges. That’s when she tells us about this seven years old girl she had to leave behind every time she has to go for travelling. The girl now stays with her father, the one who has been abusing her for years now. Suzans tune is very serious and strong. But the tears start running, from her’s and from the listeners‘ eyes.

Without free lunch no focus group. That’s why on our way to the Youth centre we stop at the mall: bread rolls, sausages, tomato-sauce and four 2-Liter bottles of neon soft drinks. All together less than 25 Euro. That’s going to be enough for serving about 20 persons.
The room is filling slowly, the young people shyly take their seats in the half round. Most of them are groundbreakers or Mpinshis, volunteers working as youth-leaders for lovelife, being connected to the very ground. Those guys give workshops and education sessions here or in surrounding schools on sports, motivation, computer-skills, HIV prevention and more. We coming from the national office are the only whiteys. But we did the thing right, we brought Nkosana with us. Nkosana originates from Orangefarm and will facilitate the focus group.
“What is it that young people would love to have”, that’s the question we want to have answered from today’s focus group. We then want to take these answers for contacting big manufacturing companies to equip our volunteers. Today it’s Christmas, that’s our thought, and the youngsters will present their wish list. Which parts of the wish list then could be realised will be the next question. That’s how we address the 20 young people. And we are prepared to note an endless list of trendy and cool accessories and clothing, all from the most ayoba labels and colours.

How do the cool guys look like?

“How do the cool guys look like?” Nkosana asks. Perplexed faces. Papi, another alumni volunteer, re-asks: “What is cool?” This triggers a quick-tempered debate on coolness and which people are cool and which people are lazy. Which people nearly fall asleep in their bureaus and which people do the work properly. That is the issue the young people are really concerned about: having the work done properly. The youngsters do want advanced training sessions on a high level, they do want to learn how to facilitate, how to debate. Their aim is qualitative dancing and doing professional sports. They want to be enabled to use a computer. And they do get enabled and empowered best by people which show flexibility and creativity, which they easily get connected with. They do not learn that from people doing as if being cool and wearing cool clothes.
Slightly irritated we note on the wish list: “Creativity” and “connectedness”.

Role models for the youth

At that moment we do not have a chance to receive answers to our question for accessories or brands. The group keeps on discussing. The self-concept of the coaches is in focus, the character and the knowhow a good youth leader has to bring with. Those who are passionate, those who know about the challenges of adolescence and who act credibly and with character, those coaches are welcome. Those become role models for the youth because they are really cool, they don’t only show off.

The volunteers, the lovelife groundBREAKERS and MPintshis are not looking for status symbols, they long for skills that will help them making their moves, that will foster their chances on the job market.

Lunchbreak. Our quick sell in the supermarket disappears from the buffet table even quicker. Nkosana keeps a bread roll for me. We share that one. Outside on the sports field I take pictures of the highly porous ground. Sun is shining, we start to sing and within seconds we are dancing. Many of the young people want me to take a photograph from them which then should be printed in the newspaper or in loveLife’s youth magazine “uncut”. I do not promise anything but I keep on pressing the releaser.
Back in the training room. While waiting for the late the youngsters perform their self written poems. “Words” Blessing starts, and the round shouts “Words”. Applause, finger chipping, next poem. Till we are complete.
Now we really want to get our answers, no more discussing. “Which items, which clothes do you need? What are you wishing for, what would be a good to have thing for you?” This time our question is in round terms, clear and well defined. We grab our pens for taking notes.

Security

“Security firm for the Youth Centre”, “Renovation of accommodation”, “new pavement for the sports ground”, “a printer”, “internet access in the computer room”, that’s what we write down. Nobody mentioning Converse Sneakers, Lewi’s trousers or Adidas Caps. They speak about winter clothes and gloves, about bicycles that could help them making their way to the next workshop site 20k away. And they would love to have a talent scout around once in a while to discover tomorrow’s celebrity. That is when the time is over, the focus group has terminated.
We are on our way back. Did those young people really mean what they were saying? The wish list definitely looks different from what we expected.

While running the Soweto marathon I came across a guy. He asked me whether everything is fine, now that we have to pass five more hills. ‘Timothy’ he said, ‘my name is Timothy.’ ‘Norbert’ was my hard breathing reply.
‘Hä’ he said, ‘hä?’. ‘My name is norbert, you know, Norbert, like No Bird. Like, in the sky, there is no bird.’
Half an our later, way down, I caught up with Timothy again, another four hills to go. ‘Hey Timothy’ I passed by. He looked at me, puzzled. ‘I know your name, I know your name.’ He touched his forefront. ‘Hallo nobody’.
